While the retail sector continues to gain most of the notoriety when it comes to RFID, the technology is being used in manufacturing facilities all over the globe. The latest focus is on Kanban and just-in-time production systems.
By deploying RFID, manufacturer Bosch has estimated that it will save more than $1 million annually by being able to move to smaller lot sizes and reduced inventory levels.
Manufacturers are successfully using RFID for inventory control, production scheduling, work-in-progress, and in Kanban operations. According to Emerson & Cuming, when it comes to inventory control, RFID can result in increased inventory visibility, real time location of critical materials and supplies, a 15 percent reduction in inventory stocks, and improved asset allocation.
